The British Prime Minister (Mr Wilson) today began his first week of solid election with his sails trimmed by the latest opinion poll.
He will have found little comfort in the Gallup sur- ' vey published by the “Daily Telegraph” today, showing the Opposition Conservatives |2! per cent ahead in 50 key marginal seats. This represents a 3.2 per cent swing to the Conservatives since the 1966 election which, if repeated nation-
I wide on voting day, June 18, I could lose Labour its overall majority. But the Labour Party had a lead of 5.5 per cent over the whole country, according to an earlier Gallup poll last week, for the “Sunday Telegraph.” Embarking on a “meet-the-people” policy, Mr Wilson is . expected to announce his 'campaign itinerary today. | He warmed up yesterday ' with a whistle-stop tour among several thousand Labour Party workers in the industrial North of England, beginning from his home town of Huddersfield. Meanwhile, the new Minister of Housing (Mr Robert Mellish), announced last night a major vote-catching change in Labour's housing policy. Mr Mellish promised to “turn the whole housing policy of this country on its head” by re-directing the £l33m-a-year housing subsidies to slum areas.
