Canterbury Cattle In Aust. Auction
Forty-nine of the 55 head of quarterbred, halfbred and threequarterbred Charolais cattle and females of other breeds in calf to a Charolais ball offered at auction near Sydney next Saturday are from Canterbury.
Forty of the cattle are from Messrs J. M. and J. H. M. Sutherland, of Centrewood Charolais stud at Waimate in South Canterbury, and Mr J. M. Sutherland and his son left Christchurch by air yesterday afternoon to attend the sale, the first auction of Charolais-cross cattle in Australia or New Zealand.
The other nine Canterbury cattle are from the' Craigmore Charolais stud of the Craigmore Farming Company. Ltd, of Maungati, also in South Canterbury. Mr Peter Elworthy from Craigmore will fly to Australia tomorrow.
The sale will be held on the Mandalong Park property of Mr R. Pisaturo, at Sit Marys. Prospective buyers have had to reserve seats for the sale.
Mr G. Bruhns, who is in charge of the stud and bloodstock office of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, Christchurch, who also left for Australia yesterday with the Sutherlands, said great interest was being taken in the sale and there had been something like 3000 applications for seats at the sale. The first Charolais cross cattle to go to Australia from New Zealand went to Mr PiSaturo. Consisting of five steers and seven heifers, they were from Mr Sutherland and were shipped from Tauranga in April last year. Mr Pisaturo will have six quarterbred Charolais heifers In the sale.
The sale will be conducted by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, in conjunction with Daigety and New Zealand Loan, Sydney, and Mr D. C. Gould, director in charge of stud and bloodstock for Pynes, will also leave for Sydney tomorrow with Mr Elworthy. It is expected that a number of New Zealanders Interested in the Charolais breed win be in Sydney for the sale.
The New Zealand cattle for the sale were shipped from Timaru at the end of March and for the last two weeks they have been in training for two hours a day in preparation for parading at the sale. Mr Sutherland, who was reluctant to discuss prospects for the sale before he left Harewood yesterday, said a
three-year-old halfbred bun he has ip for the sale, Centrewood Adventurier, had been reported to be growing at the
rate of lOjlb a day in Australia. .
Soon aftet his return from the safe Mt Sutherland may fly to Britain to attend a sale of Charolais female cattle held in association with the English Royal Show on July 9.

heifers which have been mated with a Charolais bull, and nine Angus cows and one Friesian cow also mated with a Charolais bull. The Craigmore cattle include four halfbred Charalais heifers in calf to a Charolais, bull and five eight-month-old half bred Charolais bulls. All in-calf females, have been mated with Mr Sutherland's imported bull, Matching Clemont
