Meetings May Hit Transport
Christchurch buses will stop running for several hours one day soon —probably next week—and there may be a similar stoppage of trains this Friday, probably in the morning.
In each ease the cause will be a stop-work meeting to discuss wages and conditions and to recommend or approve measures aimed at improving them. The secretary <rf thp Christchurch Tramway Workers’ Union (Mr N. Gray) said yesterday that his meeting would be addressed by the national secretary (Mr P. A. Hansen), who would also speak to unionists in the other three main centres. Advice had not yet been received on when Mr Hansen could attend. The Addington branches of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association will hold stop-work meetings on Friday, but these
■ are not likely to disrupt rail , traffic. J If the Canterbury branch of ' the A.SJLS. holds such a - meeting, however, rail tran- , sport will be halted for Several hours. The secretory (Mr J. F. E. McDowell) said yesterday that a meeting outside work- ’ ing hours had been called for tomorrow evening, and If I there was a good attendance , ft might be possible to avoid ’ a stop-work meeting.
