CHAMBER POT
Recovery From Seabed (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 28. One of the rarest treasures ever recovered from the seabed was sold in London today for f27o—an admiral’s chamber pot from the sunken warship Association. The pot was apparently specially made for Admiral Sir Cloudesely Shovell, the commander-in-chief of the British Mediterranean fleet, who was drowned in 1707 when the Association and three other ships foundered in a storm.
Sotheby’s saleroom experts, who earlier described the severely-damaged pot as extremely rare, said senior officers usually had a chamber pot as in those days sanitary conditions on board ship were very bad.
