Intensive Play For Golfers

Canterbury’s leading golfers will be subjected to a “pressure cooker” course during the next five weeks to prove their fitness and form for Freyberg Rose Bowl selection.

The period of intense competition will begin this week-end when a six-man Canterbury side plays Nelson and other leading contenders compete in the Templeton club’s summer open tournament. On February 8, Canterbury will play its annual game against Mid-South Canterbury at Ashburton, and the following week-end the Canterbury stroke championship will be decided at Waitikiri The South Island under 21 tournament will be held in conjunction with this event. An eight-man Canterbury team will take part in the South Island inter-provincial contest at Invercargill on February 28 and March 1; a week later the Woodward Cup senior inter-club series will start. The annual fixture between Canterbury and Wellington will probably take place on March 15.

But before this event, the Canterbury selectors (Messrs J. W. Logan and R. E. Clements) will have disclosed their side for the 1970 Rose Bowl tournament. This year’s contest is being held earlier

;than usual—from March 18 to 21 inclusive—at lhe Otatara course, Invercargill. The Rose Bowl team of five undoubtedly will be drawn from the eight-man squad for the South Island event, and the experience of playing on the course chosen for the Freyberg will be of great value. There is one immediate vacancy in the Canterbury side for the Rose Bowl—D. R. Hope, No. 5 last year, is at present in South Africa on a working holiday. The remaining four, R. M. Farrant, E. H. M. Richards, J. F. Logie and J. R Broadhurst, have been included in the team to play Nelson and. on current performances, they are all likely to retain their places. R. K. Atkinson, a former Freyberg representative, and G. L. Titmus, the South Island champion, are the other members of the side for this week-end’s representative match, and they are the logical contenders for Hope's place in the Rose Bowl team.
