SURPLUS LIKELY
Finances Of
Waimairi
Although it seemed the Waimairi County Council would finish the financial year with a surplus, it was very difficult to ascertain how much the surplus would be, the county chairman (Cr D. B. Rich) said at the council's third-quarter financial cost statement meeting last evening.
The chairman of the finance and by-laws committee (Cr W. T. Rice) said in presenting the accounts to December 31 that in the general account it appeared income would be up on estimate by about $BOOO, and expenditure would be down by about $5OOO.
The general account showed expenditure was $435,217 compared with an estimated $446,673, but Cr Rice said that some of the $10,205 difference would probably disappear in the remaining three months The main saving would probably be about $5OOO in the reserves maintenance account, mainly because of the good summer.
Income other than rates was shown as $124,385 for the nine months, compared with an estimated $116,076. Cr Rice drew attention to a drop of about $lOOO in insurance bonuses, and said he wondered if the increase in claims for vandalism had a bearing on this. Cr Rich said the matter might be looked into by the finance committee.
