NEW ULSTER FORCE
Regiment To Be Formed (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, November 13. A new security force will be formed in Northern Ireland in January to help to protect the State and its borders with the Irish Republic against guerrilla-type attacks and sabotage. Details of the force, to be known as the Ulster Defence Regiment, were given in a British Government White Paper accompanying legislation submitted to Parliament today. It will be a locallyrecruited, part-time force under regular British Army control, with a maximum strength eventually of not more than 6000 officers and men and open to all religious denominations. The regiment, together with a new police volunteer reserve will replace the armed Protestant B Special Constabulary, the role of which in the recent sectarian rioting in Ulster caused a storm of controversy. Its main task will be to support the 8000 British Army troops ih Northern Ireland, and it will not be used in crowd-control or riot duties.
