Stint With Orchestra

Professor J. A- Ritchie, professor of music at the University of Canterbury and a well-known Christchurch composer and conductor, did a stint in Wellington recently as guest' conductor of the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra. "A satisfying three days work” was his description of the recording and rehearsal sessions, in which he taped for broadcast later Brahms's Variations on the St Anthony Chorale, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. “Apart from the great pleasure of working with the orchestra, the members of which are so friendly and cooperative, I found the challenge of the c ock stimulating,” he said. “The Shostakovich symphony is wonderful. but long and difficult. The fact that, starting from scratch, we had recorded it in eight hours testifies to the musicianship and enthusiasm of the orchestra, which was playing ever so well.”
