church, etie ef New Bea-’ land’s leading jazz pianists, has gaine* a distinction rare for r jazzman—admisland composers. / Mr Caldwell has been admitted with full rights of membership to the Australasian Performing Right Association, the organisation which controls the payment of royalties on all public performances of musical compositions tn New Zealand and Australia. There are only 29 holders of the right in New Zealand, and it has been limited to this number since the late 19205. Only two are popular composers, and Mr Caidwell is the only jazz composer among them. The others are all composers working in thd classieal field. including Douglas Lilburn and David Farquhar, of Wellington, Jenny McLeod, of Masterton (composer on commlsalen from the Queen Elizabeth Arts Council of the mncMralsed work.

In royalties, eame “quite out of the blue.” “They just wrote to me and told me about it," he said. Although the appointment carries no monetary award, it does give Mr Caldwell the right to vote for APfi.A.’i council and officers, and also to stand for the council. Mr Caldwell has been writing jazz compositions since 1954, mainly for radio and television, and some of Ms works have been played all over the world.
