No Club Use Of Wigram
The Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) has removed any hope that the Canterbury Aero Club entertained of returing to the club’s original home at Wigram. Before committing the club fully to the expensive development of the proposed West Melton airfield, its executive wrote to the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) to find if Wigram would ever again be available for general aviation.
Mr Gordon passed the executive’s letter to Mr Thomson who replied: “The planned introduction of a jet training aircraft into the R.N.Z.A.F. during the 1970 s will require jet flying training activities to be located at a base other than Wigram.
“However, Wigram will remain the major technical and ground training base for the R.N.Z.A.F., and as the airfield will still be required for some flying training it will not be possible to make it available for general aviation,” said Mr Thomson.
