Phar Lap’s Rider
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY.
Jim Pike, the jockey who rode Phar Lap to victory in the 1930 Melbourne Cup and 26 other races, died at his Sydney home on Tuesday night after spending his latter years as a recluse.
The 76-year-old former jockey had been in ill health after having broken his hip in a fall at his home three years ago.
Pike retired from race riding in 1936 after a starstudded career of almost 30 years.
At the height of his career Pike owned 12 houses and a block of flats. He spent his last few years as a pensioner in a small rented flat at Bondi.
“I brought it all on myself,” he once said. “I just couldn’t help gambling and I became a pretty heafty better.”
