OVERSEAS TRADING

SYDNEY

The market tended to drift downwards In Sydney yesterday morning, but it rallied strongly In the afternoon. Poseidon again dominated trading in the mining sector, and strong late buying pushed the shares up to 2350 c before closing at 2300 c for a 450 c gain on the day. A good deal of interest was shown in Barrier, which rose 80c to 260 c. There was little movement among the leading Issues, and despite the announcement of an increase in the company’s nickel reserves, Western Mining rose only 10c to 1210. Turnovers in the oils were once again very heavy, but movements tended to be marginal. Industrials were mixed, with the leaders rather weak. B.H.P. fell 20c to 1385 c. The closing tone was slightly easier.

MELBOURNE Poseidon took off again late yesterday afternoon to hit 2300 c, a rise on the day of 400 c. The previous high point was 2050 c and yesterday’s rise makes Poseidon the Melbourne list’s highest priced stock. The rest of the mining and oil market was irregular as profit taking turned many issues below Tuesday’s levels. Sales.— Ampol, 132; Ansett. 99; Ass. Pulp. 182; A.C.1., 215; A.K.
