TOUR IN DOUBT
Kiwis May Miss Again
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND. The Kiwis, tourless since 1967, might miss out on a Rugby league trip next year, a letter from English League secretary, Mr W. Fallowfield, suggests.
The letter to the New Zealand League reads in part: “The question of the next world championship is in abeyance with the possibility that it may be played In Europe in 1970 or 1971 and a further possibility that it may be arranged in the United States in either of those years.” This is the first hint from Mr Fallowfleld, who is also secretary of the International Rugby League Board, that the championship may not be played next October.
The possible siting of toe championship in toe United States follows inquiries by an American promoter, Mr M. Dimitro. Mr Fallowfield was reserved in the New Zealand application for a Kiwi tour to Britain next season. “The (English) committee feels that at toe moment it is very difficult to make any firm commitments because the international calendar is still in a state of flux. “Our own visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1970 has not yet been finalised.”
Easy For Laver.— The Australian. B. Laver, made a winning start to the 550,000 Howard Hughes open tennis tournament at Las Vegas yesterday, beating J. McManus (United States). 6-3.
