FIRST OF SEASON

New Caps In Water Polo

Two new caps are included in toe Canterbury water polo team which will open toe season with a match against toe Rest on Saturday evening. They are K. B. Thornton, a former Wellington representative, and P. Carpinter, a former Otago player. Both have played for New Zealand Universities and Thornton toured Australia with toe 1966 N.Z.U. side.

The team is: L L. Gunthorp (captain), T. M. McGirr, R. A. Leach (Wharenui), M. J. M. Hay (Elmwood), M. C. Scott (Beckenham), B. G. Spear, Thornton and Carpinter (University). The team is basically that which finished second in the national championships last season, although Spear replaces I. S. Farquhar, who will shortly be leaving Christchurch. The three youngest members of last year’s team— R. Gunthorp, P. Hay and B. M. Mustchin—have been named in toe Rest.

Apart from Farquhar this team comprises players eligible for toe under 21 representative team which will be selected later in toe season. The team is; Farquhar (captain), A. B. Kindred, P. Mulligan, R. Tweedie, P. Yardley (Wharenui), M. Pope, D. Reid (Jellie Park), Mustchin, D. Gash (Beckenham), Hay (Elmwood), Gunthorp, R. Wilson (University).
