More Pay For Seamen

(N.Z. Frets Association) WELLINGTON, October 8. Seamen are to receive wage increases amounting to 22.8 per cent in a new agreement negotiated between their union and the New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation. Under the new agreement announced today by the president of the Seamen's Union (Mr W. Martin), an ablebodied seaman will be paid an additional $32.70 a month on his basic wage and an extra 13c an hour for overtime.

The increase is made up of a lift of 9.375 per cent in the basic hourly rate, which now includes incorporation of the 5 per cent general wage order increase, and the payment of $4.80 a week industry allowance. It brings the basic monthly wage of an able-bodied seaman to $176, with corresponding increases for other ratings. ■
