WATER POLO

Old Grade Favoured Wellington will seek reinstitution of the inter-provincial B grade championships at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Water Polo Board in Christchurch on Saturday. The competition was abolished at the last annual meeting of the board in February as it was felt that such a grade was catering too much for social players and that it Was not fulfilling its proper role as a grade for minor provinces and younger players. The secretary, Mr D. F. Stewart (Christchurch), said that delegates were expected from Auckland, Waikato, Manawatu, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago. All previous annual meetings have been held in conjunction with the national championships. The change in policy was brought about by the conflict of interests which team managers have as delegates during tournament play. The meeting was also thought to be more valuable if it was held immediately before the start of a season. Other remits to be discussed concern compulsory age certification for age-group championships and the restriction of the total voting powers of New Zealand board members to three for the annual meeting.
