Electra Forced To Overshoot Runway
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, September 23. A slow take-off by a light aircraft at Wellington Airport tonight forced an Air New Zealand Electra to overshoot the runway.
Air New Zealand flight 322 from Sydney had made a perfect approach across the harbour from the north and was preparing to touch down when it had to use full power to climb away because a light aircraft was still on the runway. The Electra had been cleared for landing and had its undercarriage and wing flaps down when it was warned off. The air traffic control supervisor on duty tonight said the light aircraft had been late clearing the runway, and consequently the Electra had been told to make another landing approach. The aircraft was threequarters of a mile from the runway when the order to overshoot was given and there was no danger, he said. An N.A.C. Friendship waiting to take off was also delayed by the late clearance of the light aircraft, he said. Overshoots were necessary
in similar circumstances on rare occasions but there was no danger and normal operating procedures were carried out, the supervisor said.
