N.Z. PLOUGHING FINAL

Seven Canterbury ploughmen and two from Marlborough will be among the 22 men from all parts of the country i who wili be competing in the New Zealand ploughing championships for the Atlantic Silver Plough next Saturday. The contest will be held in the North Island, about four miles from Masterton.

Two former New Zealand champions are among the contestants—S. M. Allison, of Moneyraore near Milton, who is the only man so far to have won a national championship twice (in 1959 and 1966) and E. J. Croy, of Wakanui, who was the national champion in 1964.

One of the competitors, G. A. Matheson, of Outram, who qualified in the second to last of the 22 qualifying events for the championship, was making his eleventh attempt in the series. He was second on five occasions, third twice, and fourth and fifth before coming to the top at Hinds. At Dipton only did he fail to get on the board. And at Rakaia in a class for ploughmen who had already qualified he was the winner again. This year’s champion will accompany last year’s champion, A. J. Wallace, of Cambridge, to the world championships, which will be held on September 26 and 27 on the Beograd State Farm, about 10 miles north of Belgrade, in Jugoslavia. The second place-getter in last year’s national contest, J. C. Kyle of Seadown, near Timaru, will again be a starter.
