Ireland Routs West Indies

(N. Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

LONDONDERRY.

Ireland inflicted a humiliating defeat on the West Indies by nine wickets after routing the touring side for only 25 runs.

Fielding six of their test players fresh from a perfect pitch at Lord’s, the West Indies were in hopeless trouble on the wet green wicket in the small village of Sion Mills. At one stage, the West Indies Were nine wickets down for 12 runs, and only the tail-ender, G. Shillingford, restored a shred of respectability to the innings with nine not out.

It was the lowest score by a West Indies touring team. The wreckers were two weekend cricketers, Doug Goodwin and Alec O’Riordan. Goodwin, a bank clerk, captured six wickets for five runs and O’Riordan, an engineer, four for .18. Nine-Wicket Win

The Irish batsmen showed how to handle the tricky pitch and passed the West Indian total for the loss of only one wicket. They batted on to declare at 125 for eight. The West Indians fared much better in their second innings to finish with 78 for four, but not before Goodwin had claimed two more wickets in his first two overs before taking himself off because of a bruised heel. The West Indies’ total of 25 is one of the lowest recorded by a national team. It was only a one-day fixture, but in first-class games Wisden records only one worse score by a national side.

One Man Short

This was the 18 scored by Australia against the M.C.C. at Lord’s in 1896 —but the Australians batted one short that day. New Zealand’s most celebrated low score was the 26 it made in the second innings against England at Auckland in 1954-55. But most of the low first-class scores recorded in Wisden were in the last century. The lowest total in firstclass cricket is 12, which was scored by Oxford University

in 1877 and by Northamptonshire in 1907.
