VISA REFUSED?
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
PRETORIA.
South African Government officials here said they knew nothing about an alleged rerefusal of a visa for A. R. Ashe, the American Negro tennis player.
Ashe said in London he had been refused an entry visa after the South African Lawn Tennis Union accepted his application to play in the national championships last Easter.
Officials of the Department of the Interior, which normally deals with visa applications, said an application of this kind would have been handled by tbe Department of Sport and Recreation.
The secretary for Sport and Recreation (Mr Jan Botha) said: “No such application reached me. I know nothing about it.”
Observers here said it was unlikely that Ashe would have been granted a visa to compete in South Africa as an individual, although he might have been given one if he intended coming to the country as a member of an American team.
The Government’s position on mixed-race sport, stated by the Prime Minister (Mr Vorster) on several occasions, is that it will allow teams with non-whites to visit South Africa if they come from countries with which the Republic had sporting ties.
