HALT IN AIR SERVICE
“Big Blow To Chathams”
The interruption to air communications caused by the flooding of the airstrip at Hapupu illustrated again the difficulties of access to the Chatham Islands, said the chairman of the New Zealand Support Committee for the islands (Mr R. E. Smith, of Christchurch) yesterday.
“It underlines the need for urgency in the investigation of alternative sites for an airfield promised by the Minisof Transport (Mr Gordon) when he visited the Chathams in January this year,” said Mr Smith. “The cancellation of the air service to the Chatbams is a big blow.” He hoped that the air ser-; "vice would be resumed in a fortnight The loss of the service meant that passengers and mail could not get to and from the island, except; by the Holmdale. Spare parts for fishing; boats and the fish-processing; factories could be urgently needed. The effort to stop the wasting of all the crayfish, except the tails, by sending the cooked bodies to New Zealand by air, had been halted by the delay in the air service.
