Nixon’s Visit To Rumania Explained

WASHINGTON, July 3
President Nixon will make .no far-reach-ing decisions during his talks in Rumania in a month’s time, but is merely interested in improving relations with the East European bloc, according to the United States Secretary of State (Mr William Rogers).
Mr Rogers told a press conference in Washington that Mr Nixon’s visit to Bucharest in the first days of August would not affect America's relations with the Soviet Union. “We do not think there is anything inconsistent with this trip and our relations with Russia,” he said, adding! that the President had no in-' tention of going on from the Rumanian capital to Moscow. I Explaining why the President was visiting Bucharest! after his calls on political! leaders in five Asian capitals, j Mr Rogers said that Rumania i had extended the invitation j in the early days of the; Nixon Administration.
“The President wants to do all he can to make our relations with that area more friendly,” Mr Rogers said. “He will probably discuss East-West problems, seek Rumania’s views on other international problems, and talk about the possibilities of Increased East-West trade.”
