June Cold, But Fog-free
An absence of fog was a notable feature of the weather in June, usually the foggiest month of the year, says the monthly report of the meteorological offices at Christchurch Airport and the Botanic Gardens. The soil temperatures were the lowest for June since figures were first recorded in 1935, the report says. The’rainfall was about half the average, and the temperatures were lower than normal, mainly because of the west and south-west conditions, although the winds were lighter than usual, particularly during the first two weeks, says the report Southwest changes in the afternoon of June 16 and on June 27 brought the month’s strongest wind gusts, of 50 knots. Snow fell on the afternoon of June 16. The first half of the month was dear and sunny, with some severe frosts and no rain. More cloud during the last fortnight brought higher
temperatures, with consequently fewer frosts. Day temperatures were normal, but nights were particularly cold, the report says. The mean temperature for the month was 41 degrees, the average being 43 degrees. The highest temperature at the Botanic Gardens was 63 degrees, on June 15. The highest temperature at the airport was 61 degrees, on June 14. The rainfall was 0.98 in, well below the average of 2.38 in. The sun shone for 129 hours, compared with the average of 113 hours.
