Meldie Sprints Fast In Training
Meldie and Pango, rival candidates for the Seafield Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, sprinted fast in training at Riccarton yesterday.
The No. 1 grass could not have provided footing much faster in the summer months. It was firm after a frost, and Pango sped over six furlongs on it in imin 15sec, recording 50sec for the last half mile. G. W. Mein rode Pango in the gallop but no race rider had been engaged for her up to yesterday morning.
Meldie, whose last start produced a win at a mile and 1 a half at Trentham, showed J his sprinting powers in run- ; ning half a mile under a big weight in 49sec. He was rid- ] den by W. Hastie, who was i easing him down just short of the post. Meldie, an entrant for the ■ Caulfield Cup in the spring, I will be ridden by D. under weight for a jumper. Istan Light, an early fancy for the steeples at Ashburton, also bowled Into his work keenly alongside Herndale Lad. They recorded 50 4-5 for the last half mile.
Lady Velvet (Rueben) drew up to finish a mile alongside Fathom Five (M. Skelton) in 1:45, the last half in 52.
The stablemates, Walaroo (Mein) and Sir Limond (Hunt) followed in 1:48 4-5. the last half in 52.
Time and Tide (Mein) could have readily quickened while running seven furlongs in 1:35 4-3, the last half mile in 52 1-5. ,
Strathboy (Sanderson) and Lord Sheeny (Mein) recorded 1:18 3-5 for six furlongs and 51 tor the last half mile. .
LIKELY PAIR
Watchan (Wilson) and Count Sigma (McLean) sprinted five furlongs, the last half mile in 50 3-5. They are a likely pair to represent R. B. Taggart’s stable at Ashburton.
Aconite finishing a working mile by recording 55 for the last half mile. The successful Wingatui Jockey, E. J. Didham, will ride him in his open class debut at Ashburton.
