TYRE-DEPTH RULES

Amendments Being Drafted

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 16.

Amendments to the new tyre-depth regulations which will become effective on July 1 were being drafted in consultation with the road transport industry, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said today. Mr Gordon emphasised in a statement today that the Government had no intention of extending beyond July 1 the two months “period of grace” for motorists to comply with the new regulations.

“The amendments we have in mind may mean that motorists whose tyres are sound but have less than the minimum tread depth, will have a defence if they have acceptable evidence that they were unable to get retreads or new tyres,” he said.
