Congdon Gets First Century

(From R. T. BRITTENDEN, N.Z.P.A. special correspondent)

EASTBOURNE.

With a confident display of cutting, pulling and driving, B. E. Congdon scored the first century of the New Zealanders’ cricket tour on a rainshortened day at Eastbourne on Monday.

He reached three figures in 139 minutes, although after rain the outfield was slower than on the first day and the opposing pace bowlers, unlike New Zealand’s, had deep fieldsmen in run-saving positions.

It was quite a satisfactory day for the New Zealanders, who, in 130 minutes play, lost three wickets but scored 191 runs.

Congdon’s aggressive display helped New Zealand reach 221 for three at the close of play. After 10 minutes at the start of the day when 22 were added chiefly because G. T. Dowling took 14 off an over from Jorden, who was hooked by Dowling for the first six of the tour. Beaten Off Pitch Play did not resume until 4.30 p.m. and Dowling added only one before being beaten off the pitch by Jackson, a former Derbyshire bowler who gave the attack most of its edge. Congdon took 94 minutes to reach 50, but was at 100 only 45 minutes later. B. F. Hastings batted 65 minutes while 78 were added, but seldom timed his shots well, M. G. Burgess made a good start, but K. J. Wadsworth, over-anxious to hammer the ball from his first over, had two or three bad miscues. He settled down, however, to bring off some strokes of tremendous power, and in the last few minutes Burgess also hit the bowling hard.
