Markina Trial

'TRIALS with new types of raised pavement markings on State highways will be made by the Ministry of Works for the National Roads Board. The board has been aware that drivers have found it hard to see painted pavement markings bn wet nights. This is particularly noticeable on the asphaltic concrete type of surfacing which is becoming more common in New. Zealand. A film of water covers the road surface so that the relatively thin paint markings

lose definition when headlight glare is reflected on the wet surface film. This reflected glare also occurs under street lighting. The new markings are about three-quarters of an inch high and will be glued to the road surface with epoxy-resin adhesive. Groups of five markers will be evenly spaced along each existing 10ft painted line, the leading marker in each group being reflective.

Two sites, each half a mile in length, have been selected for the trial. One is at Auckland, on the north-bound lanes of the southern motorway at Wiri, and the other at Wellington on the northbound lanes of the Hutt motorway on the approach to Ngauranga.
