CHATHAMS FISHING

Reply To Mr Kirk The Minister of Marine (Mr Scott) has challenged Mr Kirk to substantiate charges that fishing in the Chathams was being allowed to run wild, reports the Wellington reporter of “The Press.” Mr Scott said it was too soon to say whether he would be ordering a formal inquiry into the loss of the Kea and La Paloma. It was customary to await receipt of the preliminary inquiry before taking a decision on a formal hearing, but six fishermen had lost their lives and in such circumstances a formal inquiry was quite likely. He said he had decided a formal inquiry would be held into the loss last month of two Nelson fishing boats. Both sank while sailing in a convoy from the Chatham Islands to Nelson.
