CHATHAM GALE
Little Shelter For Boats
Fishermen at the Chatham Islands rode out a westerly gale last night and are faced with a force 10 storm warning for today. A deep depression heading for the islands is expected to bring winds gusting up to 85 m.p.h. In a telephone interview last night, Constable H. W. Hampton said that about 40 boats were sheltering in Port Hutt, which is only about half a mile by a quarter of a mile. The harbour gave partial shelter from the storm, but the boats were moored so close together that some were actually touching. AU the boats were secure so far, but he was concerned that there were so many vessels in such a small anchorage.
‘This applies to the whole of the island,” Constable Hampton said. “So many vessels, and so little shelter.” If any of the fishing boats broke their moorings all that could be done would be to pick them up off the beach. Nearly all the boats were manned, mostly by three men.
