No Subsidy For Flats
Plans by the Lyttelton Borough Council to build four pensioners’ Sats at Winchester Street have received a setback. A letter from the Health Department, received by the council last night, said that it could not grant a subsidy on the cost, as it appeared the block would eost a total of $22,700, or $5675 a unit The limit for subsidy was $5OOO a unit. "We are in an unfortunate position in trying to build on a hillside,” said the Mayor (Mr J. B. CoHett). The Town Clerk (Mr J; Thompson) said the architect was investigating ways of reducing costs. Smoke.—A watch was being kept on the Harbour Board’s chimney, as it was understood that at times heavy smoke was emitted, said the health inspector (Mr J. L. O’Callaghan).
