Low Poll

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, June 16. The French Communist Party emerged from the Presidential election today confirmed in its position as by far the strongest organisation on the Left. The party’s decision to abstain in the voting played a major part in increasing abstentions and blank papers by 10 per cent to a total of about 36 per cent. This is the highest figure in post-war French electoral history. Although not an overwhelming success, the policy has served the party’s purpose of presenting the Gaullist, Mr Georges Pompidou, as a President elected only by a minority of the total • French population. In a scathing attack as the results came in, the party presented Mr Pompidou as a “cheap” President, to whom millions of Frenchmen had denied the right to speak in their name.
