Britain And E.E.C.
Sir,—The politicians of Britain who have their eyes
on their European neighbours are losing their perspective of (he background of British history. Have they never heard of the crime of high treason? The Statute of Praemunire has never been repealed. If the British Parliament ever enters into the Treaty of Rome by which British sovereignty passes into foreign hands, the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and every M.P. who voted for such action could and should be impeached for high treason. Even the preliminary negotiations could bo* subject to this method of safeguarding the independence of Great Britain. Impeachment for treason could be a welcome change to the merry-go-round of party politics.—Yours, etc., W. B. BRAY. Leeston, June 15, 196 C
[We doubt whether any constitutional authority would support Mr Bray’s contention that a four-teenth-century process used to overthrow the authority by the Pope in England might be invoked for such a purpose. In any event, a sovereign Parliament can always repeal the acts of its predecessors. Ed., “The Press.”]
