Steam Trains

Sir, —May I comment on the remarks made by “Coal Fired” in your issue of Friday, June 13. Your correspondent is quite correct in that some steam trains are still running on the Rewanui and Rapahoe branches. It was anticipated that, as from Monday, June 9,1969, the changeover from steam to diesel traction power on the West Coast would be completed, and staff were so informed. However, because of unforeseen circumstances, the certification of ail locomotive crews in diesel locomotive operation was not completed by this date and, as a result, it has been necessary to continue running some services on the Rewanui and Rapahoe branches with steam locomotives while others are die-sel-hauled. It is now expected that the training scheme will be completed within a week or so and any remaining steam locomotives will then be withdrawn from service. —Yours, etc., A. D. CAMPBELL. District Traffic Manager, Railways Department June 16, 1969.
