International Race Today At Yonkers

CN.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copgrtght) NEW YORK.

Four horses representing Australia and New Zealand will challenge four of North America’s fastest pacers in the $50,000 International Pace at Yonkers Raceway this afternoon (New Zealand time). Two of the foreign entries, Cardinal Garrison (New Zealand) and Twinkle Hanover (Australia), both sons of the imported American sire, Garrison Hanover, came to the United States especially for the international series.

The other two, Adaptor (Australia) and Cardinal King (New Zealand) were bought by Americans in 1969 and 1968 respectively. Cardinal King won all three international races in 1968. Overcall (United States) and Blaze Pick (Canada) are expected to vie for favouritism on the totalisator. Each won a division of the Dan Patch qualifying races last week in the identical time of Imin 59sec for the mile.

The track handicapper makes Overall 8/5 and Blaze Pick 9/5 in his early line. Cardinal Garrison, driven by his Auckland trainer, T. H. Knowles, is listed at 3/1. Adaptor and Cardinal King, coupled in the betting as the S. Dancer-trained entry, are rated 6/1. Dancer will drive Adaptor and W. Myer will be Cardinal King’s driver. Twinkle Hanover, with R. M. Cameron driving, is 20/1. Completing the field are a pair of American 30/1 shots, Meadow Paige (W. Haughton) and Little Jerry Way (H. Filion).

The 12 furlongs of the international may prove a severe test for Overall and Blaze Pick, which are used to running the almost standard

North American distance of one mile. Blaze Pick has never gone that far, while Overcall was beaten in his only try at 12 furlongs. Cardinal Garrison, making his American debut at Yonkers last week, was beaten three-quarters of a length by Rhyl, another New Zealandbred horse, in a 2min 2 4-ssec mile. But Knowles said he was pleased with the effort—the five-year-old chestnut’s first start in seven weeks.
