ORCHESTRA GRANT
Decision By Lyttelton
The Civic Orchestra was very desirable, but it was not everybody’s cup of tea, said the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett) when the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening discussed a request for an increased grant. Cr G. C. Adams said that the financial committee had decided that the best the council could do would be to double the grant from $25 to $5O. There had been nothing since to cause a change of mind.
The Mayor said the council “had on its plate” the 1972 Pan Pacific Arts Festival, the Ferrymead scheme, and the Town Hall, and would soon be asked to help pay for the Provincial Council Chambers restoration.
“It is a question of how far we can go,” he said. “If we make a pro rata payment on the Christchurch City basis, we would be giving more to the orchestra than we do to our own St John ambulance.” On the motion of Cr R. H. Duff, the council decided to tell the orchestra foundation that it saw no reason to change its decision on the grant.
