Buddhists Held

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) | SAIGON, February 24. A militant Buddhist leader, Thich Thien Minh, and 40 Buddhist students in Saigon, had been taken into protective custody, police sources said today. The militant Buddhists, one of the two main factions of the Buddhist church, have in the past held peace demonstrations.

The police sources refused to give any details on why the Buddhists had been taken into custody last night, but in the past peace campaigners have been detained during a big Viet Cong attack. Thich Thien Minh is leader of the militant Buddhists’ Peace Youth Group, and the 40 students taken into custody with him were living at his youth headquarters in central Saigon, the police said.
