Teaching Methods
More than 80 academic staff attended a University of Canterbury seminar this week on ; teaching methods. Subjects covered in three sessions included testing and: examinations, particularly the use of objective tests; hints on the art of lecturing, and new approaches to tutorials, by a panel of lecturers from the English department, chaired by Professor P. Laurence.
Whereas some overseas university students probably had justifiable reasons to complain of lack of staff interest in teaching, this was hardly true in New Zealand, said the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the Association of University Teachers of New Zealand (Mr R. Shepherd). The fact that more than! 80 staff attended the seminar demonstrated their awareness of the importance of their 1 teaching duties, he said. In the seminar, sponsored by the association, material had been presented with the object of helping both new staff and experienced lecturers, he said.
