Anglo-French Relations
Sir, —The rift between England and France came about after de Gaulle’s last visit to Moscow, which preceded his denunciation of N.A.T.O. This move had been carefully planned and designed to counteract the pact previously made between Germany and France which, in effect, will leave Britain and her allies with the full responsibility for the defence erf Europe (via West Germany) in the event of further Soviet aggression. Stalin adopted a similar policy just before the last war, with disastrous results for his country, but in this case a whole continent is involved. Britain, along with the United States, would be justified in getting out of Europe in these circumstances and France should be left to clear up its own dirty mess. —Yours, etc., X.U.K. February 25, 1969.
