(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) VATICAN CITY, Feb. 23. The number of Roman Catholics in the world rose by 8.4 m to a record of 493.6 m between 1965 and 1967, according to the latest Vatican statistics. But the number of priests increased only 698 to 352,322 and seminarians (students for the priesthood) fell 6833 to 155,909. The statistics are in an official Vatican publication on the activity of the Holy See in 1968. The ratio of laymen to priests dropped from 1379 for each priest in 1965 to 1407 Roman Catholics for each priest in 1967.
