LEAD TO T.B.H.S.

The annual cricket match between St Andrew’s College and Timaru Boys’ High School had reached an interesting stage at the end of the first day’s play at St Andrew’s Col-

lege yesterday. Timaru gained a first innings lead of 41 but a better start from St Andrew's in its second innings had cancelled the advantage. The lead resulted mainly from good medium pace bowling by the Timaru left-armer, G. Ritchie, who on a dead pitch took seven wickets for only 36 runs. Ritchie’s ability to move the ball without losing accuracy had all the home batsmen in trouble.

P. McEwan, for St Andrew’s, looked the most accomplished batsman. He received able support from R. Pither, but the team was dismissed for 111.

Timaru was quickly in trouble and, although Ritchie and A. Dickson showed some form, it was left to a 58-run eighth-wic-ket partnership between J. Megling and J. Davies to take the score ahead. The mediumpaced attack of D. Livesy and McEwan was most effective for St Andrew's.

St Andrew’s settled quickly in its second innings and by stumps was 52 for the loss of one wicket. P. Joyce, who was dismissed for 32. Scores were: Timaru B.H.S. 152 <A. Dickson 31. G. Ritchie 23, J. Davies 29. J. Mealing 28; D. Livesy 5/48, P. McEwan 4/35), St Andrew’s College 111 <R. Pither 20, P. McEwan 28; G. Ritchie 7/36) and 52 for one (P. Joyce 32).
