Silver Savant Pays $21.80 For Win
“The Press’* Special Service DUNEDIN. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting opened sensationally at Wingatui on Saturday when Silver Savant, which was fifth in the corresponding event on the first day, led all the way to win the Allanton Hurdles and pay $21.80.
The event was the first leg of. the on-course concession double and with Stamen in the February Imnrovers’ the combination paid $329.15 for $l. Silver Savant and the favourite, Sliderule, paid $27.65. The Radiant Light-White Wine bracket carried 3732 of the 5878 50c tickets invested on the first leg. Silver Savant carried 153 tickets, and 10 of these were reinvested on Stamen.
Sliderule was a strong second leg favourite with 51 tickets.
Silver Savant, fifth on the opening day, outclassed the others in the Allanton Hurdles when he led by two lengths from the second favourite, Warm Up, a member of R. B. Taggart’s stable at Riccarton. But he had to survive an inquiry into alleged interference to Warm Up and Jewel Case when he ran the last fence down. White Wine, which trailed Silver Savant, hit the second-last fence and weakened in the run home. He beat his stabilemate Radiant Light, by a neck for fourth. STAMEN UNTESTED Stamen, an impressive winner in maiden class at his previous start, easily beat the topweight and favourite. Sliderule, in the February Improvers’. The Belilborough gelding, trained at Invercargill by his part-owner, J. Potts, was always close to the pace. After following Spare Time into the straight Stamen won untested by two lengths. Sliderule, which was hampered for room near the three, furlongs and did not get clear until into the straight, was second by half a neck from Spare Time. Footloose held on for fourth.
