West Has Easy Win

West-University defeated EastShirley by the handsome margin of nine wickets in spite of the loss of two of its key players—D. G. Trist, who w’as bowling to the West Indies at Carisbrook, and I. M. Walter, who was ill. The victory was achieved because the bowling was clearly superior and because of two excellent innings by T. W. Jarvis in his first game in Christchurch.

The pitch was very damp round both creases, the result of some extremely unwise watering the previous day. Although this affected the bowlers footing, it took East less than an hour to capture the five remaining wickets for the addition of only 33 runs. N. Kelly bowled unchanged in this period to take four wickets for only 11 runs, while G. D. V. Pulley, who rather surprisingly had to wait-for P. G. Coman to deliver six overs of medium-paced bowling before he was asked to bowl, was the only other bowler to take a wicket in the innings. East started to bat shortly before midday with the very real prospect of scoring enough runs to win the match outright. Its hopes were quickly dashed, however, by an inspired spell of bowling from N. A. Huxford. There was a little movement off the pitch but it was his ability to move the ball in the air which enabled Huxford to take four wickets, including that of Coman, in his first seven overs. C. M. Kirk bowled well, taking a wicket in his first over, and then had J. W. Grocott apparently caught at short mid-off. The umpires, after a short discussion, recalled the batsman when he was nearly off the field, but Kirk later had the satisfaction to catch him off his own bowling.

At seven for 78 it appeared unlikely that West would be required to make many for victory. J. F. Jackson, however, had other thoughts and, after a diffident start, proceeded to hit the ball very strongly on the on-side. The seven fours in his innings of 34 were all cleanly-hit pulls and drives. Then P. A. Sharp, assisted by some surprisingly quick spin from the pitch, took the last three wickets, leaving his side 87 runs to make with nearly three hours remaining. From the start it was clear that West was quite content to wait for the runs it needed. The only wicket fell at 23 and then Jamis. who completed a very good double of 62 and 41 not out, end J. G, Phillip* scored a run a minute in the hour after tea. Jarvis once again demon' strated his fine technique, playing some beautiful shots off his body, while Phillips showed a mature appreciation of the position and, as his confidence increased, drove strongly in a satisfying senior debut.
