Narrow Victory To Old Boys

A fine innings by C. L. Bull steered Old Boys to a slender first innings lead over Riccarton at Hagley 1. Beginning the day at two for 60 and needing 209 for the lead. Old Boys had many uneasy moments before the runs were finally made. The wickets of C. J. Stevens and J. H. Christensen went cheaply and although Bull received valuable support from several of the remaining batsmen, notably B. J. Maister, no other player reached 20 during the morning session.

Bull played many tine shots but was also watchful and resolute in defence. He gave two chances in his innings of 95 and was lucky to see several lofted drives float just out of reach of a fielder’s hands, but deserved great credit for the way he attacked the bowling. Bull was dismissed shortly after lunch with the total at 201 and the wicket of W. R. Barberel fell four runs later. It was then that the controversial decision on whether W. M. Duncan was bowled or not was made in the favour of the batsman and Old Boys passed the mark with two wickets in hand. Riccarton looked for runs in its second innings with G. R McAulay and R. W. Anderson in good form. McAulay scored his first 50 for five seasons and Anderson raced to 46 in only: 34 minutes hitting five fours, and two sixes. The pair put on' 74 runs at more than two a minute.

Riccarton left Old Boys 143 runs to make in 70 minutes but the challenge was not accepted. Bull was again quickly into his stride before going lbw to J. W. Kiddey, and Barberel hit five boundaries in his 27 runs.

Kiddey and D. W. Stead were the best of the Riccarton bowlers. both steadily attacking the batsmen with accurate deliveries. L. R. D. Scott, in his first senior game for several seasons. bowled tidily while at the crease. The umpires were Messsr B. Dennison and P. W. Prosser. I OLD BOYS First Innings • 60/2 continued) r L.
