Farm Subsidies
! Sir, —Several factors associated with farm subsidies ’ deserve some analysis. Pri- ’ marily, much opposition had been levelled at subsidies by those interested in flour, bread, and butter productions, with the result that these subsidies were cancelled. On a slightly declined market the plea is being put forward for a reintroduction of subsidies Which would be extracted from the public purse which, iit, its somewhat depleted state through increased costs ! and Government financial Obligations overseas, could be embarrassing. Advocates of private enterprise seem to be adopting a contrary attitude in suggesting measures indicative of “hand-outs” in the shape of subsidies on produce ; from much-over-capitalised land values.—Yours, etc., S.T.B. ■ February 21, 1969.
