Fendalton Footpaths
Sir,—lt is time the Waimairi Council did something about the very neglected state of the footpaths in inner Fendalton, especially in the area between the Wairarapa stream and the Avon River. Nothing has been deme to them for years, except a little desultory patching here and there after pipe laying or being ploughed up by entry to building projects. If the road surfaces were in a similar condition there would be an outcry. In many places the bitumen has disappeared entirely leaving rough gravel, in others lakes have to be negotiated at the entrance to driveways in wet weather, or one has to go out on to the read to avoid the cascades of heavy gravel spewed from drive entrances. We are supposed to walk daily for health reasons but it certainly is no pleasure in this area unless wearing thick rubber soled shoes.—Yours, etc., FOOTSORE. January 18, 1969. [Mr D. B. Rich, chairman of the Waimairi County Council, replies: “The complaint does not seem to be justified and the general nature of the letter makes comment very difficult Regular amounts are allowed on the estimates for the maintenance of footpaths and this maintenance is carried out as required from time to time. Reseals after service installation and other damage are carried out when required. The reference to the bitumen having disappeared cannot be understood. A problem does exist with gravel spraying on to the footpaths from private drives and this is swept back on occasions by the council workmen. This problem is, of course, not confined to Fendalton but is a problem in all urban areas. In the general area referred to, a full foot-
path reseal has been provided for in Holmwood Road on the south side in the Helmores Lane area, and this will be carried out shortly.”]
