Harbour Board Picnic
Sir,—lt- seems strange to me, that in this day and age, where everything is -being done to expedite the turn round of overseas shipping on our coast, that the Lyttelton Harbour Board see fit to choose a weekday for their annual picnic. Apparently, this means wharf cranes and presumably other harbour board services will not be available, which I’m sure can only hamper port operations for that day. Is there a valid reason why this picinc is held on a weekday and not on a Sunday in line with most other concerns?—Yours, etc., ROBERT J. GALE. February 1, 1969. [Mr F. I. Sutton, chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, replies: “Formerly picnic day for Lyttelton waterfront workers and Harbour Board employees was observed on the last Wednesday in January. The waterfront workers’ picnic day was changed to another day and negotiations are now taking place with the Harbour Board Employees’ Union with a view to having its picnic day observed on the same day as that of the waterfront workers. However, on the picnic day arrangements were made with the Harbour Board Employees’ Union to work certain essential services including working the Cashin Quay transit sheds.”]
