CHATHAMS HOSPITAL
“Satisfactory” Service The people of the Chatham Islands were quite satisfied with the hospital and medical service provided, said the medical superintendent-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr L. M. Berry) yesterday. He and the board’s secretary (Mr J. G. Laurenson) have just returned after a visit to the Chathams. The population on the sea and on the island had increased considerably in the last few years, Dr Berry said, and this had placed some strain on the four-bed hospital. “While the situation is satisfactory at present, this is one aspect we are keeping a constant eye one,” he added. The four Roman Catholic sisters staffing the hospital were doing a first-class job. A helicopter was proving most useful in getting the doctor; Dr J. Holmes, to places where he was needed quickly, and also for transporting to the hospital. A helicopter was used to take the doctor to an urgent case at Owenga while he was visiting the islands, said Dr Berry. Patients needing treatment that could not be provided on the Chathams were flown to Wellington Hospital.
