Taylors Mistake should win surf titles
BAYLOR’S MISTAKE x appears certain to retain the senior and junior titles in the- blue riband event of surf life-saving, the six-man -rescue and resuscitation event, at the third Canterbury championship carnival at Pines Beach tomorrow. Last year Taylor’s Mistake, again the leading contender for the title of premier club in Canterbury this year, won the women’s sixplace, event but this year’s team is comparatively inexperienced and will have to bow to Waimairi, South Brighton, North Beach and an improving Central Brighton Ladies’. Although the Taylor’s Mistake senior six is not likely to beat the allconquering Gisborne club, Waikanae, at the New Zealand championships at Gisborne, it will be using tomorrow as a further’ oppor- - tunity to build up its combination. At the first carnival of the season at South - Brigh-
ton the first round of the senior six was run but faulty judging forced officials to scrub the result and call a re-run later in the day. Unfortunately bad weather forced the carnival to be abandoned before this could be done. Taylor’s Mistake, with five points lost, was a clear winner of the next round at North Beach and unless it performs well below its best tomorrow should have no trouble taking the title. In the junior six Taylor’s Mistake’s superiority is not as clear cut and South Brighton, in particular, and North Beach have strong claims for the title. At North Beach, Taylor’s Mistake won the six by more than three points. The reel, line and belt exponents will have a busy day. There will also be heats of the four-place alarm championships in the three sections, and the finals will be decided at the concluding carnival at Taylor’s Mistake on February 16.
Fresh from his victory over the country’s best in the surf ski event at the inter-districts championships at Waimarama last Saturday, R. Dalton (North Beach) is almost certain to repeat his success in the Canterbury’ title race. His brother, D. Dalton should issue a determined challenge and the trio from Waimairi, P.' Davies, J. Hughes and Pj Stevens are others likely to be in the picture. A. Haslett (Sumner) will probably add the junior Malibu board title to his paddleboard and surf ski titles won at North Beach, and make a clean sweep of the junior light craft events. The Cook Strait surfboat race has injected a lot of interest into this branch of the sport and the North Beach and South Brighton crews, who crossed the strait even after unfavourable conditions had forced the cancellation of the race, should have a dose tussle tomorrow. Both have now reached a high standard of seamanship..
