More Meat Storage
A start was made last Tuesxx day to reduce the temperature in this new cold store for lamb and mutton which has been completed at the Belfast works of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company. The store will become fully operational on Monday. The store, clad in aluminium outside and inside and measuring 100 ft by 88ft and 20ft 6in high (these are interior dimensions), is believed to be the largest store of its type in the Canterbury area—that is fully insulated with fibreglass. The construction of the store alone and not including refrigeration equipment and road and rail reconstruction
and servicing has cost $84,762 and it has been completed in about 20 weeks. In the store, lamb and mutton careases will be handled on pallets and the collapsible type pallets which will be used are understood to be the only ones of their type being used to carry meat in New Zealand. They can be collapsed after use in carrying meat for ease of transport back to the works. The store has also been designed with loading out into containers in mind. Two fork lifts will be used in the new store, including one of the reach type. The store represents the first stage of freezer extensions at the works.
