DEE DEE CUP PICK

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Dae Dee .the light-weight Lochcourt and the Hastings visitor, Dalvul, leek the best entrants for the SSOW Rotorua Cup today. As might have been expected, the excellent stake drew a strong, well-balanced field, the possibilities besides these three include Arbroath, City Court, Odeon, and Valiant Rebel. What might decide the issue is luck in the running because there is bound to be a rush over the first furlong or so to the first bend, and the home straight is seldom . sufficient to give the back runners much chance. , Counting against Lochcourt is her habit of becoming awkwardly placed for the first few furlongs. Dee Dee has sometimes lost her chance through a slow beginning but she showed abundant early speed last time, at Matamata a week ago, when she won the Caltex Gold Cup. That was Dee Dee s best form for a long while, she paraded in capital order and it is reasonable to expect she has trained on meanwhile. •Having been second twice in his last three starts Arbroath is well due to win. With any luck he must have been successful last time, when Valiant Rebel beat him in the W. S. Spence Handicap. Dalvul, the top-weight with 8-12, is a good sprinter-miler which has not yet gained the same distinction over a. middle distance. The last time he went further than a mile in a handicap was when he finished third with 9-3 over 11 furlongs at Hastings on November «. City Court won the Wellington Cup with 8-0 and he is.up llib for the Rotorua Cup. The increase should be enough to steady him- because he does not look up to much weight. He has shown himself such a good stayer, however; and will have to be accorded considerable respect. The second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Tourist Handicap, will probably be between Samurai, Bostock, ReoSered, and Fair Law. Another interesting runner will be Miss Lynette, having her first start from I. R. Tucker’s stable.

The track will be soft. Selections:— 11.1* a.m.—Arawa Nursery: First division: Duty Free, Kalaua Lad. Second division: Sykes, Prlnxa Nizami,
